Early Childhood Education and Care: Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Credit Transfer

As per the AQF (Australian Qualification Framework), credit transfer can be defined as a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.

If you are thinking of completing your CHC50113 Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care with an RTO (Registered Training Organisation) HBA often suggests that you first complete your CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care qualification- doing this qualification prior to completing the Diploma will allow you to experience a general feel of the industry at a lower AQF level and allow you to have a direct credit transfer for 14 units for the Diploma in Early Childhood.  To gain a credit transfer, you need to actually hold the UOC (unit of competency).

Within the Diploma of Early Childhood, there are a total of 28 units, once you complete the certificate III satisfactorily, you will only need to do 14 more!

If you hold a qualification which has been superseded (outdated) such as CHC30708, CHC30709, CHC30712 (certificate III) or CHC50302, CHC50908 (Diploma) – which contain the older units, then credit transfer cannot apply. The reason behind this is that these units within these qualifications are no longer active and as a training organisation, it would be a breach to grant a credit in this circumstance.  To check whether your qualification/ unit code is superseded, you can visit training.gov on the following web link http://bit.ly/2k4NRYC

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The AQF states that RPL is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process that assesses your experience, knowledge, skills and prior learning to determine and acknowledge the extent to which that individual is currently competent against the standards of the unit of competency for which the individual is seeking recognition. An RPL applicant must demonstrate currency of skills and knowledge in the last two years.

This process is quite different to credit transfer as it uses collected evidence in the form of documents, photos, video’s etc. to assess the individual’s competence. RPL can be obtained for units or full qualifications (depending on the evidence provided).

E.g. A person who works as a Physical Educational teacher in a primary school may be able to gain RPL for the unit:  CHCECE002 Ensure the health and safety of children if he/she is able to submit enough evidence to show they have satisfactorily demonstrated the required skills and knowledge for this unit.
